THE ISLANDS

Contained within Pightle Farm is an area called ‘The Islands’. the islands

The fish pond complex in the islands were originally constructed by hand in the medieval period to provide fresh water fish for the Manor House. We hare recently found in an Archaeology survey that the medieval fishpond complex was rebuilt in 1575 (by the Chernock family) and the ponds were probably modified and incorporated into the local garden landscaping. The main pond, to the south of the complex, is retained by an earthwork c.3m high, and the ponds to the north by other substantial earthworks.

The cattle have enjoyed free range during the summer period as the islands provide natural shade and the cattle have grazed some of the vegetation so have helped to partially clear the area.

Eventually, this is an area that we would like to restore
