HULCOTE MANOR

The history of Hulcote Manor which was located in the field North of St Nicholas’s Church was first recorded in 1086.

 

1086 The Doomsday Survey, at this time the Manor was owned by William Speke and occupied by the tenant Ralph Passwater. The Manor had 5 villagers, 8 smallholders and 1 slave.

By 1284 the overlordship of the Manor passed from the Speke family to the Barony of Bedford (the Beauchamp family) remaining with that family until at least 1428.

 

In the 13th century Gilbert Passwater was Lord of the Manor.

 

1337 William Passwater conveyed the Manor to Nicholas Fermbaud.

 

1366 The Manor was owned by Catherine Fermbaud and her husband John Woodville.

1428 Thomas Fermbaud, alias Woodville owned the Manor

​

1449 Sir Richard Woodville was Lord of the Manor.

1541 Richard and George Sheard descendants of Richard Woodville, then sold the Manor to Richard Chernock. The Chernock family held the Manor until the death of Sir Villiers Chernock in 1779.

​

1779 The estate was passed to Edward Harvey a descendant of Chernock’s nephew.

 

1812 there is evidence of the house in an engraving by Thomas Orlebar-Marsh. At this stage the property was called Hulcote House and ‘was by then much dilapidated’. The title of Hulcote Manor had been passed to the original Hulcote Rectory, as it remains to this day.

 

1826 William and George Montague held the House between themselves, and an heir Bennett (Montague) held half of the House into the 20th century, the other half was devolved to Charlotte Orlebar-Smith.
